Willy Leeuw co-founded Leeuw Mining and Exploration (Pty) Ltd (LME), a company formed by the Leeuw brothers, to pursue their interests in the mining industry. He led the successful bidding process for the acquisition of Anglo American’s KwaZulu-Natal coal resources, on behalf of LME in 2002. Willy has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience, interacting with Government, consulting engineers, financial institutions, parastatals and industry at large, whilst establishing and promoting LME as a junior coal mining company. Willy participated in the Department of Mineral Resources’ (DMR) initiated Executive Preparation Programme under the auspices of the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA). He served on the Board of Directors of Mhlatuze, the company that initially dealt with the administration of Junior Coal Miners coal allocations at Richards Bay Coal Terminal. Willy successfully managed LME, through the difficult times of the global economic downturn of 2008 through to January 2012. He also served as Deputy Chairman of the South African Mining Development Association (SAMDA) for three terms. SAMDA was started in 2000 by emerging South African junior BEE mining companies to enhance and promote the participation of the historically disadvantaged in the mining sector.
